Style & Design
5/10

The ‘new’ Beetle isn’t that new anymore, and a recent facelift did little to update the look. It lacks the fashionable chic of the MINI, and as it gets older it just looks sillier and sillier. It was cool once, for a while, but that day is long gone. The convertible’s roof is appallingly clunky too.

Performance
7/10

The Beetle isn’t really a hardcore machine, so its relaxed performance is perfectly in keeping with its laid-back dynamics. The 1.4 takes a painful 14.6 seconds to reach 100km/h (the convertible is even slower). The 1.6 can hit 100 km/h in an acceptable 11.6. The Turbo is fast (8.7), but silly.

Ride & Handling
6/10

VW’s bug is more about comfort than all-out handling, although the dynamics are predictable and secure. The trade-off is superb ride quality, though be aware that it can get a little floaty if you press on. No surprises here, but not much excitement either.

Interior & Ergonomics
6/10

The interior is actually very attractive in the Beetle, though putting a flower in the standard vase is about as kitsch as it gets. Painted metal surfaces work well with funky design, though the upshot is poorly arranged dials and extremely awkward electric window switches.

Quality & Refinement
8/10

Everyone knows that VW no longer possesses the holy grail of quality, but the Beetle is nonetheless a tough customer and by now, all the kinks have been worked out. It’s refined too, considering how old it is, while the Cabrio is remarkably hushed, roof up or down.

Safety
7/10

The Beetle is a solid little car with standard ISOFIX and three headrests with three 3-point belts in the back. ESP stability control is also welcome, though side and curtain airbags are absent in the Coupe. The Cabrio doesn’t have pop-up protection, either.

Space & Practicality
4/10

The shape might be cutesy, but it comes at the expense of rear headroom and boot space. Front passengers have oceans of headroom, but legroom isn’t great front or rear. Storage space in the dash is adequate, but overall the Beetle suffers for its bulbous silhouette.

Value & Running Costs
7/10

The Beetle never sold in vast numbers, so while its appeal isn’t that broad those that love them LOVE them. Therefore, it’s easy to sell on and holds its value pretty well. There are no real reliability issues either, though it’s worth shopping between dealers for repair and service.

Equipment
6/10

It’s reasonably well-appointed, the Beetle, but air conditioning is an expensive €1,500 option and alloys are standard only on certain models. Electric roof is standard on the Cabrio model and all have electric windows and remote locking.

Engine Specifications
7/10

The Beetle’s engine range is broad enough to suit any buyer, ranging from the slow 1.4 to the zippy 1.8 Turbo. The 1.9 TDi is an old engine now, so we’d recommend the 1.6 for its best blend of reasonable performance and low running costs.

I used to have a 1973 beetle - I wonder is this the same fun to drive??
