Verdict

In 2006 Fiat and Suzuki decided to collaborate on a car and they both released the SX4 to the market. Fiat sold it as the Sedici whereas Suzuki called it the SX4. In 2013 Suzuki released the SX4 S-Cross which is a bulkier crossover version of the car. The SX4 S-Cross proved popular on the Irish market and it was introduced initially with a very competitive price. This car is in competition with the Nissan Qashqai and other popular crossovers. The difference with this vehicle is that the price is very attractive and for that you get a good return.

Performance

There are two engines available to the Irish market. There is one petrol engine which is a 1.6 litre offering. The petrol model is not available with four wheel drive but it does offer 0-100 km/h in 11 seconds and according to the manufacturer it has maximum speed of 180 km/h. This engine appears to be fuel efficient too if Suzuki’s figure of 5.5 litres per 100km is taken into account. The diesel engine is a 1.6 DDiS and this can be available with four wheel drive. This offers 0-100 km/h in 12 seconds (13 seconds with 4x4) and has a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Once again it appears that this is an economic engine with Suzuki quoting a combined fuel economy of 4.4 litres per 100km (4.6l/100km in 4x4).

Ride & Handling

Like with the Suzuki Vitara, the SX4 S-Cross is a fun vehicle to drive. However, that doesn’t mean that it offers the perfect ride. The car can be bumpy over bumps and ramps in the road. The car deals with body roll in a very controlled manner and the steering is responsive and very accurate. This car grips the road nicely too.

Refinement

The SX4 S-Cross would not have the same refinement that you would find in the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, but by no means is it too far off. The engines can be loud under pressure but they even out nicely when you get to cruising speeds. The SX4 S-Cross deals well with wind and road noise too. Some of this noise does come through to the cabin but it’s not terrible.

Quality & Reliability

This crossover uses a lot of plastics in the interior and it can feel cheap to the touch. However, the vehicle is reasonably priced and therefore potential owners shouldn’t expect gold trim in here. The seats are comfortable and the dash is simple but not ugly. The infotainment system within the vehicle is extremely easy to use and it doesn’t have the same amount of bells and whistles that you might find in the cabin of some of its rivals. All trims that are available on the Irish market come with USB and Bluetooth connectivity.

Safety & Security

Seven airbags surround the interior of the vehicle and in 2013 the SX4 S-Cross received a full five stars in the Euro NCAP. The rear of the vehicle comes with ISOFIX child seat anchor points and tyre pressure monitoring system as standard.

Space & Practicality

This vehicle offers very good space in the boot with a capacity of 430 litres. There is ample head and leg room to the front. To the rear, the leg room is perfect but taller rear passengers may find that the head room is lacking. This car measures in at 4,300 mm in length and is 1,765mm wide.
