Verdict

Currently one of the most active car segments in the world is the Compact SUV/Crossover segment. It’s here where you will should-be hatchbacks that are styled with more bulk and an off-road appearance. This is where you will find the Qashqai, the Yeti, the Renegade, the 500X, and many more besides. This is a bustling segment and here lies the Mitsubishi ASX. The ASX has a visual appeal with plenty of curves and if more focus was put on marketing, it might do better in terms of sales against the likes of the brilliant Nissan Qashqai. What would help Mitsubishi here is their excellent 8 year warranty, which really means that you should be able to trust a brand like this.

Performance

You will find that there are only two engines available to the Irish market and neither of them carry an ASX with four-wheel drive. The petrol engine is a 1.6 litre offering with a five-speed manual gearbox. This offers 117 PS and a maximum torque of 154NM at 4,000rpm. According to Mitsubishi it will bring you from 0-100 km/h in 11.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 183 km/h. The other engine is a 1.6 litre diesel. This offers 116 PS and maximum torque of 270Nm at 1,750rpm. In terms of 0-100 km/h it will achieve it only slightly quicker than the petrol engine at 11.2 seconds and it has a maximum speed of 182 km/h.

Ride & Handling

This is where the vehicle would fall down against the Qashqai. The ASX rolls more in corners and its steering lacks the responsiveness of its Nissan counterpart. What it does handle well is road imperfections as it tackles ramps and bumps with ease.

Refinement

Both the petrol and the diesel engine make noise during acceleration. The diesel is a lot louder and it doesn’t even out as much as you would like on the motorway either. Both road and wind noise also enter the cabin at higher speeds.

Quality & Reliability

There is only one trim available to the Irish market and that is called “Instyle”. Leather seats come as standard across the range as does a multifunction steering wheel. The dash is nicely laid out and the touch screen and infotainment system offers connectivity to USB and Bluetooth. Instyle also comes with Voice Control that allows drivers to make calls without touching the phone.

Safety & Security

In 2011 the Mitsubishi ASX received a full five stars in the Euro NCAP. The car scored highest for adult occupancy with 86%. For child occupancy the ASX scored 78%. For pedestrian safety and safety assist it scored 60% and 70% respectively. This vehicle comes well-surrounded by at least five airbags and it also offers two ISOFIX anchors to the rear. For those of you who aren’t great at hill starts this has Hill Start Assist as standard. Active Stability control with Traction Control are also within the vehicle.

Space & Practicality

The boot of the ASX offers a competitive 419 litres and getting items in there is easy. The space to the front is more than ample and there is good leg, head and shoulder room. Five adults could fit into this vehicle but for maximum comfort four would be enough. The car also has an underfloor compartment which is good for storing more valuable items. The rear seat can be folded completely flat and it has a 60/40 split, which means larger items can be carried around in this machine.
