The Mercedes GLE-Class comes in two forms to the world. First up is the SUV form, it's boxy, and it appears to be very traditional. Then, for those of you who like the sportier-looking things in life, you can opt for the bulky Coupe SUV look. Mercedes are sitting up and looking the X5 and the X6 squarely in the eyes, and inviting them for a tussle. This car is great for competition, and Mercedes are really rolling out the options to try and take the top spot in terms of luxury sales.
There is a good selection of both models to the Irish market. There are a range of engines in both forms. The smallest in the coupe version is a 3.0 litre diesel engine that offers 0100km/h in 7 seconds and a top speed of 226km/h. The 3.0 petrol offers 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds and on-paper it can reach 247km/h - not that these top speeds will mean much to Irish drivers. The SUV version of the GLE has a 4 cylinder 2143cc diesel engine that gives 200hp and will bring you from 0-100km/h in 8.6 seconds. The 3.0 litre diesel offering gives 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds, while the 3.0 litre petrol does the same speed in 5.3 seconds.
The 9-speed automatic gearbox is excellent, and changes gears at the right times in a very smooth fashion. This car is smooth over most surfaces and it controls itself well on corners. Grip is good is the all-wheel drive models. There is a rear wheel drive option available to the Irish market too.
This vehicle is well padded on the inside and while you can certainly here the engine climbing up to speed, it still holds its refinement. The interior is well built and there seems to be good padding around the vehicle to fight off noise intrusion.
The interior is as classy as you would find in most Mercedes. It’s not as interesting as the X5, but it’s not worth complaining about it. As always, the infotainment system could be less confusing.
The GLE Class has not undergone Euro NCAP tests, but it does have a fair amount of safety equipment. One thing worth mentioning is the Crosswind Assist. This clever technology helps fight off crosswinds. The car comes with a large number of airbags and a plethora of technical safety equipment.
The normal GLE is a giant on the road and space is not an issue. It offers a 690 litre boot. Leg room and head room are not issues here.
