Verdict

Released to the Irish market in 2016, the F-Pace is a whole new direction for Jaguar. Never before have they released an SUV, and by all accounts it’s an excellent first attempt. It comes up against the very successful Audi Q5, the Porsche Macan and the BMW X3. Some of what you see in the F-Pace will be familiar to you if you’ve ever sat in a new Land Rover, but the F-Pace has been given enough self-identity to stand out on its own.

Performance

Three engines have been made available for the Irish market. The entry level rear-wheel drive 2.0 litre i4 diesel offering gives 180 hp and will bring you from 0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds. There is a four-wheel drive version with the same engine that will do the same space in 8.2 seconds. There is also a range of 6-cylinder 3-litre engines in both petrol and diesel. These obviously return a much quicker 0-100km/h figure.

Ride & Handling

Chances are that the less expensive rear-wheel drive models will be the big sellers for Jaguar with the F-Pace. There is a choice of a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. For comfort, we’d say to opt for the automatic. Of course, if you have the money to spare, then by all means go for the V6 options. The suspension on entry level models is a bit bumpy on uneven surfaces. There is an adaptive suspension available, which tackles those surface imperfections in a better fashion.

Refinement

The smaller engines are hushed enough and the interior is well padded to ensure that you don’t hear unnecessary sounds. Obviously, if you go for the V6 models you’re more likely to hear the engine roar. Despite its shape, it doesn’t suffer from major wind noises either.

Quality & Reliability

As should be expected, the F-Pace is made up of good quality materials – however, some of the casings look a bit cheap. It’s very familiar in here if you’ve driven some of the latest Land Rovers. Everything is easily laid out, the touch screen is easy to use, as is the infotainment system.

Safety & Security

The F-Pace has not received a star rating yet from the Euro NCAP. However, there is a large selection of safety features available with the car. Sadly, a lot of these are optional, like; Park Assist; Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition and Blind Spot Monitor.

Space & Practicality

The F-Pace has a very large boot that offers 650 litres. The seats fold in a 40:20:40 configuration. With these seats folded flat, the load is increased to 1,740 litres. There is good leg and head room to both the front and rear. Keep it to two adults in the back, otherwise it’ll be a bit cramped.
