Verdict

When the BMW X6 was first released fans and motor journalists alike wondered what this machine was all about. This is a mixture between an SUV and a coupé. BMW call it a Sports Activity Vehicle or a Sports Activity Coupé. The X6 is unconventional in appearance but that hasn’t put some people off buying it. Believe it or not, this is proving to have a cult audience around the globe. The second generation brought with it many improvements which may be one of the reasons for its success.

Performance

The X6 is built on the X5 and uses much of the same DNA. Under the bonnet you will find either a very powerful 4.4 litre engine that offers 449 bhp, or one of three diesel engines. The X6 xDrive30dE offers 258 bhp, torque of 560Nm at between 1,500 & 3,000rpm, a top speed of 230 km/h and 0-100km/h in just 6.7 seconds. Also in diesel is a 3.0 litre engine that offers 313 bhp. The X6 M50d’s 3.0 litre engine offers 381 bhp and according to BMW it will bring you from 0-100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds.

Ride & Handling

Like the X5, the X6 is an impressive drive that feels almost car-like. This is a very heavy machine that ways over 2,000kg, so it’s surprising how well it tackles bends in the road and how it doesn’t suffer by way of body roll.

The X6 operates a capable-enough four-wheel drive system. This will certainly do the trick for most Irish road and weather conditions.

Refinement

There is a slight amount of road noise from the wing mirrors because, like on the X5, they are large and bumpy. Apart from that, the vehicles is well-padded and insulated appropriately. The inside of this coupé-like car is very refined. The diesel engines can be loud when accelerating to motorway speed, but everything evens out nicely once you get cruising.

Quality & Reliability

As with most BMW products, the interior of the X6 is of excellent quality. While the instrument cluster and the infotainment system is directed mainly at the driver, passengers seem to be a big focus for BMW in this model. Everything is easy to use and very comfortable. The X6 is brilliantly equipped in terms of technical comforts like cruise control, SATNAV and heated seats.

Safety & Security

There are many driver aids available as standard with the X6 including, headlight wash, first aid kit & triangle, a Thatcham 1 alarm system, park distance control (rear and front) and night vision with pedestrian recognition. If you want further equipment you have to pay extra for items like the lane change warning system, and for adaptive LED headlights you will have to fork out a further €2,427.16.

Space & Practicality

The X6 is a very large machine, but because of the sloped coupé-like roof to the rear, headroom in the back seat is not amazing. The boot of the vehicle is also awkward because the height suffers from the sloped roof. This same roof line also leads to slight visibility issues from the driver’s seat.
