Style & Design
7/10

The second-generation Mazda MX-5 moves the game along nicely, retaining the charm of the original but bringing it bang up to date with modern design standards. It’s crisp, clean and very pretty, though it does need big wheels to look right, which it doesn’t get in Ireland.

Performance
3/10

The MX-5 has never been about raw speed, but its 9.4 seconds 0-100km/h time is poor (9.6s for the Roadster Coupe). A Mazda6 diesel is almost as fast. The (rumoured) upcoming 2.0-litre is faster (7.9 seconds) but hopefully an MPS version is in the works to unlock the MX-5’s performance.

Ride & Handling
8/10

Ride and handling is what the MX-5 is all about, though the new model isn’t quite as delicate or engaging as the original. It’s safer and grippier, but when did growing up mean more fun? The steering is quick but a touch numb, making it harder to throw around.

Interior & Ergonomics
9/10

The MX-5’s interior is excellently laid out and ergonomically perfect. It’s tough to change gears with a coffee in the cup-holder and the seats are very narrow, but otherwise it’s one of the purest driving environments in the world at any price.

Quality & Refinement
6/10

The MX-5 isn’t the most refined machine on the road. It’s noisy on the move (especially the coarse engine) and the ride is sporty firm. Having said that, it’s not bought for its cruising ability. Mechanically and in terms of its interior quality, it feels like a solid product.

Safety
6/10

The 2005 MX-5 has some welcome safety additions, including rollover hoops behind the seats, twin airbags and pre-tensioners. Stability control isn’t offered on the 1.8, but it is available on the upcoming 2.0, as is a limited slip differential and larger wheels and tyres.

Space & Practicality
7/10

Nobody buys an MX-5 for its versatility but it is practical for what it is. There’s enough interior room for your basics and you can lock the compartments if you want to leave the roof down. The boot is small but retains its 150 litre capactiy roof up or down (hard or soft-top) and access is easy.

Value & Running Costs
8/10

The Mazda MX-5 is now much better value, following a price slash around the time Mazda established its own distribution company in Ireland. It’s still a big heap of cash for a very little car, but running costs are low, it’s economical and resale is rock solid.

Equipment
4/10

Mazda doesn’t exactly load the MX-5 with toys. Expect remote locking, electric windows, electric mirrors and a CD player. The SE adds alloys, fog lights, a better stereo and a leather steering wheel, but A/C isn’t even offered. The Roadster Coupe includes an electric folding hardtop.

Engine Specifications
3/10

Only one engine is available in Ireland, an uninspiring 126bhp 1.8, though the livelier 160 2.0-litre is coming in 2007, we hear. The first MX-5 would have gotten away with so little power, but the new car is heavier and struggles with so little oomph.
