Style & Design
8/10

The Mazda6 is quite the looker in the flesh, with its muscular front wings and sophisticated detailing. Shame, then, that the flanks are a little plain compared to the rest of the car. Still, there’s enough sex-appeal in the stance and the glasshouse to help us forget the flat sides.

Performance
7/10

The 1.8-litre is no bullet but at least it’s smooth and willing to be thrashed if necessary. The 2.0 is faster and better for it. The 2.5-litre is disappointingly flaccid. The diesel is best – it’s not blistering off the line but it’s got proper overtaking grunt and is refined, too.

Ride & Handling
7/10

Given Mazda’s Zoom-zoom philosophy and the outstanding handling characteristics of the Mazda3 and new Mazda2 we had high hopes the 6. Sadly, it disappoints. The ride is excellent and refinement top notch but it doesn’t excite in the corners, feeling competent but disinterested overall.

Interior & Ergonomics
7/10

Mazda’s generally have excellent cabin layout but their insistence on using one dash-top display to relay heating, stereo and trip computer info is irritating. Despite the excellent switchgear layout you have to keep looking at the display which detracts from an otherwise outstanding cabin design.

Quality & Refinement
7/10

The Mazda6 was disappointing in terms of cabin quality. The door trims on our test car felt loose and the quality of the plastics used were surprisingly poor in places. I don’t doubt it will last the course but the likes of the Renault Laguna and Ford Mondeo shade it for finish and tactility.

Safety
9/10

Six airbags and ESP are standard on all Mazda6’s now, as are ISOFIX child seat mounts, seatbelt reminders – all the basic stuff we need these days. All but the base model have foglights and cruise control, too. Parking sensors should be more widely available but otherwise tough to fault

Space & Practicality
8/10

The Mazda6 is as big as majority of rivals but is put in the shade by the gargantuan Ford Mondeo. Rear space is decent, the boot’s a good size and front seat occupants are very well taken care of. In cabin storage space is excellent, too, while one-lever rear seat folding is a nice touch too.

Value & Running Costs
8/10

The Mazda6 isn’t the cheapest car in its class but the VRT changes should help level the playing field for Mazda. In addition, specification levels are higher for the 6 than rivals and it’s also likely to hold its value better than rivals as well. The diesel will be the on everyone will want.

Equipment
8/10

Executive gets 16-inch alloys, ESP, A/C, 6 airbags & 4 elec windows. Exec SE adds 2-zone climate, cruise & leather steering with audio/trip controls. Sport adds 18-inch alloys, bodykit & foglamps. Sport SE adds auto lights/wipers, CD changer, Bluetooth. Z-Sport adds leather, keyless go & Bose audio.

Engine Specifications
6/10

The 120hp 1.8 copes but is as unexciting as you’d expect of a base engine. The 2.0 is a little quicker and worth the extra but the 2.5 isn't. The 140hp, 330Nm 2.0-diesel is the pick here – smooth, nippy and super-frugal.
