  • Summary

Quality worries, Sport is more fun.

Style & Design
7/10

The first proper upmarket Range Rover is still an iconic car, despite being around since 2002. Its styling is not as taut as the Sport but it is more grown up and regal. The 2005 facelift added detailing clutter to the grilles and lights where none was needed.

Performance
8/10

The TDV8 hits 100km/h in 9.2 seconds and is limited to 200km/h. Combined with a fine transmission, it feels quick and agile on the move. The discontinued V8 petrol was only marginally faster (8.7 seconds 0-100km/h) and much thirstier. Supercharged V8 is plain fast: 7.6 to 100km/h and 210 all out.

Ride & Handling
7/10

The Range Rover isn’t as focused as the Sport, but is fun and easy to drive nonetheless. The steering isn’t as sharp and it rolls a bit more, but the ride is more composed and it’s a better mile muncher than most luxury cars.

Interior & Ergonomics
9/10

The interior is exquisite, even compared to the Sport and Discovery. It’s beautiful to behold and very intuitive to use. The driving position is excellent too. As with other LR cars, the electric window switches are badly placed and the door handle is too low. However, these are minor complaints.

Quality & Refinement
9/10

The Range Rover isn’t as problematic as the Sport, now that most of the kinks are resolved. Its interior quality is first rate, with a warm, sumptuous feel to the wood and leather finish. It also rides better than any of its siblings or rivals, giving it a top-class, luxury feel.

Safety
9/10

Each Range Rover comes with front, side and curtain airbags, ESP, front seat load limiters, Terrain Response, ISOFIX child seat mounts and three 3-point seat belts and headrests in the rear. SE adds bi-Xenon lights, parking aids. HSE adds back-up camera. Tyre pressure monitors are optional, though.

Space & Practicality
7/10

The Range Rover is only a 5-seater but at least all 5 adults sit in proper comfort with ample space behind for luggage. There’s a useful drop-down tailgate and lots of storage areas in the cockpit. A 7-seat version, to compete with the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Mercedes GL, isn’t planned for this model.

Value & Running Costs
6/10

Compared to the Sport, the Range Rover is bigger and has a nicer interior but it’s not as nice to drive or as appealing as the Sport, despite costing thousands more. It doesn’t hold its value as well as the Sport either, and running costs are slightly higher.

Equipment
8/10

SE has 7” touch screen, leather steering, 2-zone climate, electric leather seats, auto lights & wipers, 18” alloys, trip computer & air ride. HSE adds heated memory seats, Xenon lights. Vogue adds 19” alloys, heated steering, sunroof, wireless camera, Sat Nav, TV, premium audio. SC adds 20” alloys.

Engine Specifications
9/10

As of 2007 only two engines power the Range Rover, the awesome 272hp, 640Nm 3.6 diesel V8 and the amazing (but thirsty) 396hp, 560Nm supercharged 4.2. The fine 306hp, 440Nm 4.4 V8 has been dropped from the Irish line-up due to excellence (and popularity) of the diesel V8.

3/5

Expensive hobby to run, especially fuel costs, however surpisingly easy car to work on and service yourself, if you are anyway handy. Great driving experiance though, very comfortable and now available for Ford Mondeo money. Lot of kit, everything is "just standard" on these cars, no need to worry if the previous owner ticked all the right boxes on the options list.
