Style & Design
8/10

The Freelander 2 has taken the design theme from its larger siblings and now looks like a baby Range Rover rather than the entry-level Land Rover. It’s handsome, modern and very desirable machine. Shame the chintzy grille looks so cheap.

Performance
7/10

The Freelander Td4 can hit 100km/h in 11.7 seconds and top 181, while the i6 reaches 100 in 8.9 secs and 200km/h flat out. The diesels figures are more relevant and are above average.

Ride & Handling
7/10

The Freelander 2 has brilliant handling for its genre, but then again the first one was pretty handy too. This one feels chunky and well planted and the grip levels are seriously impressive. Steering could be a touch quicker, though, and the ride suffers on big wheels.

Interior & Ergonomics
7/10

The Freelander 2's new interior has a chunky, substantial feel to it, even if it looks a bit sparse on basic models. The controls are very straightforward and intuitive. The seats are bigger and better than before so its a more comfortable place to be.

Quality & Refinement
8/10

The Freelander 2 is a huge improvement in terms of quality. It feels and look much better built, but then the last one was so shoddy that it is not much of a compliment. Road manners are good and even the diesel is quiet.

Safety
8/10

The Freelander 2 has driver & front passenger forward airbags, front seat side airbags, full length curtain airbags & inflatable driver’s knee bolster as well as ESP and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

Space & Practicality
7/10

New model is bigger with a longer wheelbase and should be much more accomodating. There is no 3-door so you have the 5-door practicality in all models. There is a substantially bigger boot than before. It loses out to some rivals on account of not having 7 seats though.

Value & Running Costs
8/10

The Freelander 2 is a more premium product than its rivals, so as such was always going to be more pricey. The entry point is not bad value but is still more expensive than some better equipped rivals. The residuals are likely to be very strong.

Equipment
8/10

All get 16-inch alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, single slot CD. S adds 17” wheels, Comand Shift, Terrain Response. SE gets better ICE and parking sensors. HSE gets 18” wheels, leather trimmed seats, leather wheel, memory seats, top-end ICE and Xenons.

Engine Specifications
8/10

There are two versions offered and they are the 160hp 2.2-litre TD4 and the 233hp 3.2-litre petrol. The diesel is going to make up most sales and is quiet and powerful with 400Nm of torque. Petrol feels urgent but will find few takers.
