  • Summary

So-so to drive, awful cabin, odd size, plasticky.

Style & Design
6/10

The Sirion is a rather funky-looking little supermini with a cute face, chunky wheel arches and a very Japanese-cool rump. It’s a tidy and well-resolved design but it lacks the detailing (dull wheels, bland grille, too much bare sheet metal) to make it stand out.

Performance
6/10

The 1.0 Sirion needs 14 seconds to reach 100km/h and tops out at 159km/h, while the 1.3 zooms to dual-carriageway speeds in only 11.3 seconds and can manage 171km/h all out. The 1.3 also feels a lot livelier when overtaking or climbing uphill.

Ride & Handling
6/10

The Sirion is a competent but uninspiring handler. It grips well enough and doesn’t roll too badly, but the steering is a little slow and light to be engaging. The brakes are strong and it’s got a slick gearbox, but that’s not enough to make it fun.

Interior & Ergonomics
6/10

Daihatsu tried to make the Sirion’s interior funky and cool by borrowing cheesy translucent Aygo bits. Despite the visual assault, it’s still relatively easy to use. The stereo buttons are a bit fiddly, but otherwise the controls are pretty intuitive and the driving position is good.

Quality & Refinement
6/10

The Sirion has been built to a price and despite their best efforts to jazz up the cabin, Daihatsu can’t hide the hard, cheap plastics used to make most of the car. It’s screwed together superbly well but doesn’t look great. This, combined with a rather loud cabin, makes the Sirion seem very cheap.

Safety
8/10

Every Sirion gets twin front and side airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners and three 3-point seat belts, ISOFIX child seat mounts, and headrests in the rear. Curtain airbags and ESP aren’t offered in Ireland. However, it still managed a 4-Star NCAP result.

Space & Practicality
3/10

By supermini standards the Sirion is quite small, so rear space can’t match the likes of the Grande Punto, Fiesta or 207. The boot is a reasonable, if unexceptional, size and in-cabin space is rather limited. It’s a disappointing package, really.

Value & Running Costs
6/10

The Sirion is seriously good value, by the standards of the supermini class, but it does lack space and isn’t as good quality as other cars in its class. Running costs are minuscule and reliability should be top notch. Your big enemy here is resale values.

Equipment
7/10

Standard equipment on the GX 1.0 includes remote locks, electric windows and mirrors, and a CD player. The GX 1.3 adds A/C, while the sport adds fog lights, 14” alloys and a rear spoiler.

Engine Specifications
8/10

Two engines are offered in the Sirion: a capable and very willing, but slightly overworked, 69bhp 1.0 and a much livlier 87bhp 1.3, both courtesy of Toyota. Both are fine engines, but the 1.3 is definitely the way to go.
