Style & Design
6/10

The Copen is cute but a bit toy-ish to be taken seriously. Its very small, very round and has big round lights and a smiling grille, which means it's appeal is quite narrow. It's gorgeous if you like cutesty, a bit nauseating if you don't.

Performance
7/10

The Copen's 0-100km/h times tumble by 2 seconds to 9.5 and top speed climbs to 180km/h which makes it real-world nippy compared to the lethargic turbo model. It's no performance car but then that's not really the point, is it?

Ride & Handling
6/10

Its handling isn't bad for a small, front-drive roadster but the relative lack of rigidity means the suspension never quite copes with poor road surfaces. The steering could also do with being a bit quicker and offering more feel and the ride is rather stiff but overall it's acceptably agile.

Interior & Ergonomics
5/10

The Copen's cabin has that mid-nineties MX-5 look and feel to it which isn't necessarily a bad think. Everything is where you expect it to be and it's simple to operate but the driving position is a little cramped even if the Recaro seats are excellent.

Quality & Refinement
6/10

The plastics used in the Copen's cabin are distinctly 1990's but they're well nailed together. Mechanically, it feels very robust too but refinement isn't a strong suit - the ride stiff, the cabin is noisy and there's a fair bit of roof-down buffetting.

Safety
5/10

The Copen's not exactly overflowing with modern safety gizmos. Apart from twin airbags, rollover hoops, seatbelt pre-tensioners and ABS, there's really not much to sing about. ESP, side airbags and advanced rollover protection are not even optional.

Space & Practicality
5/10

Space isn't something the Copen has a lot of. Roof up there's enough headroom and a decent sized boot but legroom is tight for taller occupants and the cabin is narrow, too. Roof down, the boot almost disappears and there's not a lot of in-cabin storage space either.

Value & Running Costs
7/10

Twenty-odd grand really isn't a lot of money for a little two-seater roadster (especially one with a folding hardtop) and that doesn't take the long warranty and bullet-proof reliability. Tax and insurance isn't back breaking either although it might take some time to sell on at the right money.

Equipment
8/10

Only one model is offered and it comes with air conditioning, 15-inch alloys, CD player, sports suspension, wind deflector, electric windows and mirrors, remote locking and a rear spoiler. Leather is €900 extra.

Engine Specifications
7/10

Only one engine is offered in the Copen and it's not the buzzy 700cc turbo-charged unit anymore. The revised Copen now gets a 87hp, 120Nm 1.3-litre Toyota engine. It isn't the smoothest in the world but it is quite capable if you're willing to thrash it and much more relaxing about town.
