The Citroen C4 hatchback is a mixed bag of modern design and old school flair. With so much strong competition in its segment, it struggles to compete in terms of individual appeal.
With a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines to choose from, the Citroen C4 is more about economy than it is performance. That said its 150bhp Blue HDi diesel engine and the latest PureTech petrol 130bhp engines offer great low end torque and power delivery with the benefit of delivering exceptional economy. There is also an option of 120bhp Blue HDi diesel and 110bhp PureTech petrol. There is a choice of manual or automatic transmissions but we would recommend avoiding the auto as it can be quite jerky at low speeds.
One for the drivers, a Citroen C4 may not be but what it does do is offer class leading levels of comfort. This is car that is not built for speed but for comfortable motorway cruising. Its supple suspension setup means it’s not the quickest to change direction in an out of corners and not exactly the first name in fun. A Volkswagen Golf is a lot more engaging and enjoyable to drive. While the Golf may not be as comfortable on B roads, it just as good on the motorways. The Golf or a Ford Focus are the more agile, fun options.
Comfort is no doubt one of the engineering feits of the Citroen C4. The seats are soft but cosseting offering great support. One very obvious factor of driving the C4 is the almost complete lack of wind noise within the cabin which is a real pleasure. There are three levels of trim as standard, Touch, Feel and Flair with the top level Flair trim level bringing just the right level of equipment including dual climate control and a panoramic sunroof. The PureTech petrol are audibly smoother than the Blue HDi diesel options but the diesel also offer good levels of refinement.
The C4 is a definite step up in quality when compared to its smaller siblings the C3 and C1. The use of materials is clearly of a higher quality. While the interior may not be as streamlined as the Volkswagen Golf, it is on a par with the styling of the Ford Focus. The new Opel Astra however has raised the bar even further featuring an ultra modern design that is hard to beat. That said, the Citroen C4 is comfortable, quiet and is a perfectly nice driving environment to be in. The touch screen infotainment system is identical to the system found in the sister Peugeot 308 meaning connectivity is good but the system itself a little clunky to use. The interior feels slightly boring though.
The Citroen C4 scored the highest in the Euro NCAP crash safety test with a score of 5/5. It features a decent amount of safety kit as standard too featuring six airbags as standard with traction control, hill start and electronic stability control. You can spec your safety further with items like blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, directional LED headlights and 'Citroen Connect Box' which enables you to contact local emergency and breakdown services.
The C4 gets one of the largest boots in its class with an impressive 408 litres as standard, but this does slightly compromise rear legroom for passengers. If you are looking for the ultimate space in this segment, look no further than the Skoda Octavia. The Panoramic roof in the C4 Flair model makes the cabin feel really spacious and adds to passenger comfort too. You will find yourself short for additional storage within the cabin though, with a small glovebox and slim door pockets.
