OK on the move
It's a van!
Hi spec for a van
It's C-Max money...
Roomy, affordable, sliding doors
Looks a bit 'vanny'
Slow off the line
It's no C-Max
Low seat position
No 3rd row option
ESC is €500
...but no A/C or ESC
A/C costs over €1k!
Van-like design, ESC & ESP add almost €2k
As small van-based MPVs go, the Berlingo Multispace is quite an appealing machine - honest, unpretentious and somehow chic, too. Above all, it's a functional-looking machine and we like that, although it will always look like a van parked on your drive.
Once up and running, the Berlingo Multispace can clip along reasonably well but getting there, particularly when loaded, can take a while. It's also not the best car we've ever seen at overtaking The 92hp version is noticeably faster and is well worth the couple of hundred quid extra.
What's surprising about the van-based Berlingo Multispace is how well it rides - and it's not just smooth it's quiet, too. The steering isn't going to have you yearning for the race track but it's not going to annoy you either. It's chassis, like the car in general, is painless and forgettable.
Being van-based has its advantages, too, of course. The cabin is ridiculously simple in terms of layout and there's a ridiculous amount of storage space in the cabin. Only the seating position, which is set too low, and the distant handbrake irk.
It's surprisingly hushed and it rides rather well but the plastics are clearly van-derived and the general fit and finish is more commercial than passenger-car.
We were surprised to find the Berlingo Multispace had six airbags as standard but disappointed to find ESC (as essential in people carriers, we feel) was optional. It's got a solid 4-star NCAP rating, though, and ESC isn't outrageously expensive.
Compared to a Ford C-Max or Nissan Qashqai, the Berlingo Multispace is simply vast, with a huge, square boot and oceans of passenger room. The rear seats tilt and fold individually and we love the twin sliding doors. Shame there isn't the option of a temporary 3rd row of seats.
The Berlingo Multispace is surprisingly expensive when compared to, say, the Ford C-Max. Powered by the exact same 90hp engine, the C-Max is only €1,100 more than the Multispace but has air conditioning, alloy wheels and ESC as standard. The point of the Multispace is its cheapness, I thought?
While the Berlingo Multispace has a reasonably amount of equipment the fact that air conditioning, ESC and alloy wheels add almost two grand to the price is disappointing. It's got the basics but no more.
Only two engines are offered in the Berlingo Multispace, a high- and low-power version of the same 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine. They work well in the context of budget family motoring and they're reasonably smooth but you need to work the gearbox to get the most from them.
