The Chevrolet Kalos is actually a rebadged Daewoo Kalos (GM bought Daewoo in 2003) while the Aveo is, in turn, a rebodied Kalos, originally intended only for America but brought here with the launch of Chevrolet. The Chevrolet Aveo is pleasantly chunky but '08 facelift can't hide Daewoo origins.
The Kalos 1.2 can reach 100km/h in 13.7 seconds, which isn’t bad for a small-engined supermini. Top speed is 157 km/h but getting there takes LOTS of time.
The Kalos offers reasonable grip and predictable handling but its suffer from a choppy ride, lots of body roll and a steering that’s a bit too slow to be fun. It’s competent, but no more.
The Kalos’ aging dash is logically laid out & simple to use (except for the stereo) but very plasticky. The driving position could also be better for taller drivers although visibility and the general layout are both fine.
The Kalos feels as if it has been built to a price, with hard and cheap plastics and poor refinement. It's pretty well screwed together and it seems pretty tough mechanically, but it doesn't seem to take the punishing a Japanese car can.
The Kalos was NCAP tested in 2006 and achieved 3 stars, while its sister car, the Aveo performed poorly in the frontal impact & only got 1-and-a-half stars. Front airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors are standard but ESP and side/curtain airbags aren’t offered.
The Kalos is not longer available in saloon form so buyers have to plum for the Kalos hatch, which has less rear space but is nonetheless useful and about as roomy as most of its rivals. The rear seats don’t do anything fancy like slide or tilt, though.
The Kalos represent cheap motoring. It's very inexpenisve to buy and run and are largely reliable, but they’re not very desirable used so values suffer.
Only one model now, the Kalos SE, which comes with central locking & electric front windows. Remote locks, electric rear windows and even a CD player is optional. A/C isn't even offered anymore.
With the Aveo essentially replacing the Kalos, it now gets only one engine, a coarse but reasonably willing 72bhp 1.2. The 1.4-litre engine was a better buy but, alas, the Aveo has it now!
