Style & Design
9/10

Easily the best of all the current BMWs, the Z4 successfully melds together all the elements of traditional BMWs with Bangle’s design cues. The Coupe is even better looking than the convertible but both are very wheel sensitive. M models are particularly delicious to behold.

Performance
8/10

The basic 2.0 hits 100km/h in 8.2 ses and 220 km/h all out, but never feels that fast. The 2.5 feels (and is) much faster: 0-100 in 7.1 and 230km/h, while the 2.5si scorches to 100 in 6.5 and hits 240km/h. The 3.0si is plain fast: 5.7 and 250km/h, snapping at the Z4 M’s heels (5.0 and 250km/h).

Ride & Handling
6/10

You’d expect the roadster version of the ‘Ultimate Driving Machines’ to be a cracker, but it’s actually quite disappointing. The balance and poise is there but the steering is devoid of feedback, so you’re less happy throwing it about. The Coupe is much better but still not as good as it should be.

Interior & Ergonomics
8/10

The interior is very driver-centred, with nicely located controls, a fine driving position and clear, easy-to-read dials. Getting in and out could be easier (long doors, low seat) and in-cabin storage space is miserly. Visibility is fine in both models, though.

Quality & Refinement
7/10

The quality of the Z4 matches that of any other BMW, meaning it’s beautifully made from high-quality and expensive materials. The refinement isn’t great, though, because the convertible suffers from some jiggle and roof-up wind-noise. The Coupe rides better and is quieter overall.

Safety
7/10

The 4-Star roadster has front and side airbags, ESP, a first-aid kit and warning triangle, run-flat tyres (with warning). ISOFIX is optional, however, and curtain airbags (Coupe) aren’t offered. A limited slip differential only appears in M models.

Space & Practicality
7/10

By sportscar standards the Z4 is about average. It’s strictly a 2-seater, but you can turn off the passenger airbag and ISOFIX a child seat in the front (optional). The roadster’s boot is also pretty small but there’s a bit more space in the Coupe. Various carrying accessories are available also.

Value & Running Costs
7/10

The Z4 is expensive compared to the Mazda MX-5 and a bargain next to a Porsche Boxster/Cayman. It will hold its value exceptionally well, however, and won’t be too expensive to run, either, by BMW standards. The bigger the engine, the bigger the bills and the greater the depreciation.

Equipment
7/10

All Z4s gets climate control, remote locks, and electric windows & mirrors. The 2.0 gets dreary 16” alloys & a manual hood. SE adds a power hood, fog lights & a trip computer (plus 17” alloys, auto lights & wipers, leather trim on 3.0si). Sport & M add 18” alloys plus M suspension, seats & steering.

Engine Specifications
9/10

The base 4-cyl 2.0 offers a smooth 150bhp but the 177bhp 6-cyl 2.5 is much livelier and sounds better. The 218bhp 2.5si is so good the 3.0i had to be replaced by the 265bhp 3.0si. It’s the best engine in the range, though - not as manic but almost as fast as the Z4 M’s 343bhp 3.2.
