Style & Design

The combination of BMW’s flame surfacing and traditional chunky off-road styling elements works well on the X3, but it’s still blighted by some awkward detailing around the bumpers and lights. The basic shape of the car is great, though, and the facelift does improve things greatly.

Performance

The 2.0d needs just 10.2 secs to hit 100km/h and tops out at 198km/h. The 2.5si is much faster (0-100km/h in 8.5secs, 220km/h) almost as fast as the 3.0Si (7.2 secs, 232km/h (limited). The 3.0d is no slouch (7.4secs, 220km/h) but the 3.0sd is a bullet: 0-100 in 6.6 secs and 240 km/h all out.

Ride & Handling

As you might expect, the X3 handles with balance and poise. The steering, like most BMWs, is a little numb but it’s less of an issue in a vehicle like this. The body control is superb and it feels precise and planted on the road, but the upshot is a very hard ride quality and zero off-road ability.

Interior & Ergonomics

The X3 is arguably BMW’s best interior, with a nicely laid out (and slightly conservative) dashboard, intelligently placed switches and a complete lack of i-Drive. The driving position is superb too, but the Sat Nav is cumbersome to use and the stereo’s volume knob is tiny.

Quality & Refinement

In terms of build quality and materials the X3 impresses, giving you the feeling that you’re driving a truly premium product. However, the cramped rear confines and hard ride mean it’s not as refined and comfortable as it should be, especially for those in the back.

Safety

Apart from superior dynamics and all-wheel-drive, the X3 is also fitted with a hugely complicated ESP system; tyre pressure monitors; front, side and curtain airbags and three three-point seatbelts and headrests in the rear. ISOFIX is a miserable €120 option, though.

Space & Practicality

In terms of SUV versatility, the X3 comes up short. The rear is cramped in terms of both head and legroom and the boot is disappointingly small. It’s fine for small kids, but too tight otherwise. It’s also abysmal off road, further reducing its versatility.

Value & Running Costs

The X3 is extremely expensive by class standards, and as such represents poor value. Residuals are also hard to predict because it’s not a hugely popular car, so we wouldn’t recommend buying one unless you can comfortably afford it. Running costs will also be higher than competitors.

Base X3s get 17” alloys, climate control, leather wheel, e/windows & mirrors, remote locks & trip computer. SE adds cruise control, armrests, auto lights & wipers, park aids, fog lamps & multi-function wheel. Sport adds 18” alloys; sports suspension, steering & seats. M-Sport adds M wheels & trim.

Engine Specifications

The base petrol engine is now a fine 218bhp, 250Nm 2.5i 6-cylinder. The 150bhp 2.0d is less powerful but packs 330Nm, which makes it feel much quicker. The 6-cyl 218bhp 2.5i is superbly peppy, while the new 272bhp 3.0si is much faster than the old 3.0. The 286 bhp, 580Nm 3.0sd is bonkers.
