Style & Design
8/10

Like the 5-Series with which it shares much of its mechanical components, the 6-Series received the mildest of mid-life tweaks in 2007 with new light clusters, bumpers and wheels. Sadly, it doesn't look any better but what it lack in beauty it makes up for in drama.

Performance
8/10

The 630i and 635d are quick cars (0-100km/h in 6.3/6.2 seconds) and while the 650i is a little quicker (0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds) it's a heavier and thirstier making it a bit superfluous. The scary M6 needs F1 driver skills in the wet with the ESP off.

Ride & Handling
7/10

The 6-Series was revised in 2007 but the chassis was unchanged. It remains comfortable on long journeys but still fun in the twisties, though the suspension is a bit firm for Ireland and it can feel feels heavy in corners. The steering is pretty numb, too, while the M6 is a proper handful.

Interior & Ergonomics
8/10

The dash comes straight from the 5 Series but with a better driving position and sportier seats. It's also a great looking cabin with fantastic dials and with newly relocated window switches are relocated and eight new i-Drive avoiding programmable buttons, it's heaven in there.

Quality & Refinement
7/10

While it feels exquisitely made and mechanically tough, refinement levels are severely effected by big wheels and the crashy sports suspension. That said, it looks terrible on small wheels so what can you do?

Safety
8/10

The 6-Series has six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, ESP and emergency brake lights as standard. Automatic lights and wipers and parking sensors are standard also. There's no NCAP rating.

Space & Practicality
3/10

For such a big car the 6-Series’ packaging is dreadful. The rear seats are tiny, even by 2+2 standards, and despite huge doors, rear access is a disaster. There’s almost no space for odds and ends either, and the boot is not even that big because of its odd shape.

Value & Running Costs
4/10

The 6-Series is eye-wateringly expensive and really isn't worth the money. A hundred grand gets you a lot of bling these days. Running costs are high, though new 635d should help, while residual values aren't as robust as you might expect either.

Equipment
6/10

All have six airbags, electric windows, remote locks, a CD player, air conditioning, i-Drive and 17-inch alloy wheels but you have to shell out more for essentials like cupholders, an iPod jack, Bluetooth, sat nav and an automatic transmission.

Engine Specifications
8/10

Four engines are offered in the 6-Series, with the 635d (306hp/580Nm 3.0 twin-turbo diesel) displacing the 630i (258hp/300Nm 3.0 6-cylinder) as the pick of the range. The 368hp/490Nm 5.0 V8 is barely faster while the M6's 500hp, 520Nm 5.0-litre V10 overwhelms the chassis.
