Verdict

The BMW 6 Series (E24) was first introduced to the world back in 1976, which means that this car has been gracing our roads for 40 years now. The car replaced the old E9 coupés. This first generation of the 6 Series lasted until 1989 and the second generation didn’t arrive until 2003. 2011 is when the current generation started, but don’t worry, the entire model range got a subtle facelift for 2015. The 6 Series is now available as a 3-door coupé, a convertible, and a 5-door Gran Coupé.

Performance

The Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé come with the same choices in petrol and diesel. Regarding petrol choices there is the 640i 3.0 litre engine which offers 320 bhp and the 4.4 litre 650i engine which will give you a whopping 449 bhp. In terms of diesel there is the 640d, which gives 313 bhp. Then there’s the M6, which of course throws a few wild horses on top of those figures. The 4.4 litre engine in this roars with a massive 560 bhp and gives 680Nm of torque between 1,500 and 5,750rpm. Put the foot down in one of these and we’re told that you will reach 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds.

Ride & Handling

The 6 Series handles beautifully while cruising. It is a little unsettled at lower speeds, but this could be because the car is eager to take off and perform. The suspension set up is firm and while the steering is good, the 5 Series is better.

Refinement

Both the diesel and petrol engines in the 6 Series makes only the noises that BMW want you to hear – which is a good thing. It’s when the car picks up speed on motorways that the refinement and composure of the vehicle comes to life as it deals smoothly with the road in front of it. While the 6 Series is well padded, the noise off the very large wheels can be pretty loud.

Quality & Reliability

This machine is brimming with high quality materials – and so it should be because the entry price is only a little shy of €100,000. The dash is driver orientated and the iDrive infotainment is intuitive and extremely easy to use. Standard features in the 6 Series include DAB Radio, USB & Bluetooth connectivity, Concierge Service and SATNAV. There are some expensive optional extras available like; internet for €151.44 and TV function for €1,482.58. It’s difficult to understand why BMW doesn’t just pack all of the extras into the 6 Series – considering the already massive price tag.

Safety & Security

The entire 6 Series range comes with an extensive list of driver aids like; Lane Departure Warning, Approach Control, Person Warning, City Braking, Active Cruise Control, Parking Assistant, BMW Night Vision, Surround View. There are also ample airbags to the front and rear. The 6 Series has never been tested by the the Euro NCAP but many belive that it would have scored a full five stars.

Space & Practicality

The front of the 6 Series Coupé and convertible offers plenty of space, the back seats on the other hand don’t. You will get adults in there, but if claustrophobia is a worry then I’d just stick to letting the kids sit there. The boot of the Coupé is surprisingly big though – it offers 460 litres. Both the front and the rear of the Gran Coupé offers ample leg space. Head space to the rear isn’t great, but this is down to the sloping roof line.
