Verdict

Now in its third generation, the Audi TT styling has never lost its flair. It now dons a more aggressive appearance, the latest technology and now packing the driving experience it always missed. A brilliant, fun driver’s coupe

Performance

In standard guise the Audi TT packs quite a punch. The entry level features a 2.0 TDI diesel with a 2.0 TFSI petrol unit also available. Both can be specified with either a silky 6-speed manual (which really suits the TT) or the 7-speed S-tronic which provides some theatre. In the petrol version in particular, emitting pops and crackles on the overrun. Diesel: 2.0 TDI with 184 bhp. Petrol: 2.0 TFSI with 230bhp. The diesel is an excellent unit derived from the Golf GTD. The 230bhp petrol unit however, coupled with the TT’s brilliant new setup provides proper coupe performance and fun.

Ride & Handling

The TT is now based on Volkswagens brilliant MQB platform so it’s now lighter and more engaging to drive. The TT is available in standard Sport or S-line trim with a choice of two wheel drive or quattro all-wheel-drive. If you fancy something a bit more hardcore however, you can opt for the Porsche Cayman rivalling TTS which derives 305bhp from the 2.0 TFSI four cylinder to catapult you from 0-100kmh in under five seconds. The TT is now 50kg lighter and is sharper and more engaging than ever to drive. Probably one of the best all-round everyday coupes on the market.

Rafinement

The Audi Drive Select system is standard across the new TT range making even more adaptable to all conditions. In petrol models, this is a more focussed system enhancing handling in Dynamic mode while improving throttle response and shift speeds in the S-tronic fitted models. The diesel entry model is fitted with a sound symposer inside the cabin so you get a sporty note while driving at all times. The driving position is excellent and you feel really close to the ground. You can opt for stiffer suspension on S-line models, but for maximum comfort, it might be best to stick with the standard as performance is not compromised.

Quality & Reliability

The new Audi TT cabin is a streamlined less is more approach from the German premium marque. It is a beautiful cabin finished with cold to the touch aluminium inserts and quality materials throughout. If you opt for the S-line trim, the half leather and alcantara seat design is not far off that of its ultimate R8 supercar sibling. The TT was the first to feature full TFT screen in the instrument cluster known as the Audi Virtual Cockpit. It is a beautifully executed interior and feels like an extremely upmarket piece of kit.

Safety & Security

The Audi TT surprisingly did not score the full 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test, but achieving a four, failing on a technicality for lacking a city braking safety feature. As is standard across the Audi range if you want the latest in safety tech, prepare to dig deep into your wallet and get ticking that option list. You do get 6 airbags and electronic stability control as standard.

Space & Practicality

Probably not the TT’s underlying forte, if you are big on practicality then clearly it is not the car for you. If you have no children however, boot space stands at 305 litres which is more than adequate. It is quite a shallow boot however so some clever packing tactics do need to be employed. The TT is designed with a 2+2 format so it is technically a four seater. If you do have children however, they best be small as it is rather cramped back there. It is a sports car after all.
