Available in Coupe, Cabriolet or Sportback, the Audi A5 is a stylish alternative to the BMW 4 Series Coupe, Cabrio and Five door Gran Coupe but with an aging interior that lacks the panache of its newer competitors.
The Audi A5 is available with a range of engines. Petrol: 2.0 TFSI 190bhp with 6-speed or 7-speed S-tronic. Diesel: 2.0 TDI with 150 or 190bhp with a choice of 6-speed or 7-speed S-tronic with Quattro all-wheel drive. Or the 3.0 TDI with 218 or 272bhp with a choice of 6-speed or 7-speed S-tronic with Quattro all-wheel drive. The performance and economy of the 3.0 TDI is hard to fault. With that said the 2.0 TFSI is not exactly wanting for power either with all engines demonstrating impressive performance credentials. If opting for the 2.0 TFSI, choose the 6-speed manual gearbox as it makes more engines performance
The A5’s long wheelbase enables it to absorb lumps and bumps very well. All in all the coupe offers a composed dynamic performance and agile which you really want from a coupe. The cabriolet manages to perform to similar levels while the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe makes for a more supple and engaging ride than the Audi’s five-door A5 Sportback rival. The Sportback feels a little too soft and is slow to change direction. Overall it makes for a comfortable but much less engaging drive that that of the BMW.
The 3.0 TDI offers effortless performance and refinement and while the 2.0 TDI may offer the lowest power output, it spread of power is strong. While acceleration may not be instant, it’s there for overtaking at motorway speeds. If you fancy almost the ultimate in refinement and speed from the A5 range, look no further than the S5 providing explosive overtaking capabilities from pretty much any speed. Opt for the 7-speed S-tronic in this model and you’ll never look back with its supercharged six cylinder engine making the most of the power on tap.
The interior in the A5 is well designed if not a bit dated going by the level of the new A6’s interior in 2014 and the most recent A4’s interior in 2015. Design aside, the quality of finish to the interior is of a quality you would expect from Audi. That said, there are more buttons on display to press and play with and that’s no bad thing at all. The driving position is excellent and if you opt for the Coupe, you can find yourself getting involved in the driving experience thanks to its griper front end in and out of corners.
Standard safety features on the A5 coupe include ESC stability control, front side and curtain airbags with a plethora of safety systems to choose from the options list. These include adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and blind spot warning systems. The current A5 coupe has been around since 2007 so it is due an update very soon in the near future. With the newer model expect the same host of new safety technology as seen on the latest A4.
Access to the rear in all models is good. In the Coupe however, those over six foot will feel tight for headroom. Legroom is ample in all models, but again those with longer legs will be tight for space in the rear of the Coupe. And despite the sloping roofline of the Sportback, it loses 5mm of headroom in the rear when compared to its A4 saloon sibling. Boot space is excellent at 445 (10 litres larger than its BMW 4 Series rival) which is boosted again by folding rear seats.
