Audi has finally ditched the ruler and the results are astonishing - svelte, athletic, emotional - all words you could never have used to describe an Audi in the past. There is a hind of BMW about the tail but overall it's tough not to love the gorgeous lines.
No A5 is slow but the 3.0 V6 TDi Quattro is the quickest and slickest of them all, preferable to even to the S5's 4.2-litre V8. More engines are planned in time, though, including a 180hp 1.8T and a 170hp 2.0TDi, both of which will hit 100km/h in the mid-eights.
The A5 is based on the sophisticated 2008 A4 platform and while the ride and balance is much improved and understeer is much less prominent, the A5 still lacks involvement and doesn't change direction with quite enough vigour. Quicker steering is needed.
Nobody makes a cabin quite like Audi - modern, sober, ergonomically flawless. The A5 ticks all those boxes but has a roomy, low-slung driving position that's like slipping on a favourite jacket. MMI joystick/screen system is best of the German carmakers but it still annoys.
Few carmakers can nail a car together quite like Audi and the A5 is probably Audi's best car. The quality of the plastics, the finish and the solidity are all to drawer while refinement levels are surprisingly high even on the sport S5 model.
The Audi A5 should be an easy 5 star NCAP contenter, with six airbags, ISOFIX child seat mounts, seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, ESP, automatic lights and wipers and park aids all standard. Active Xenon lights and adaptive cruise are optional.
The A5 is surprisingly accommodating for all occupants, front and rear. No, it's not a family car, but it's intelligently arranged so there's space for humans in there. The boot's vast, too, and in-dash storage improves compared to the old A4 cabin.
Until the basic A5 models are rolled out the A5 will compete with only the ritzier 3-Series coupes but even so it compares well in terms of price and specification. Running costs will be high, especially with the large engines, but it should hold its value very well.
Equipment levels are high with 6 airbags, electric windows, remote locks, power steering, 17-inch alloys wheels, climate control and cruise control on all models. Dip into the options list and it starts getting expensive -leather, sat nav, bigger wheels all add up.
The diesel 190hp/400Nm 2.7 V6 TDi and 240hp/500Nm 3.0 V6 TDi (Quattro only) are superb and outclass the 265/330Nm 3.2 V6 petrol engine (FWD with CVT or Quattro with manual or auto). The S5's 354hp/440Nm 4.2-litre V8 isn't worth €20k more than 3.0 TDi.
