Norway to Ban Petrol and Diesel Cars?

Norway is planning to ban petrol cars by 2015 in order to combat Co2 emissions and to encourage car manufacturers to begin making more eco-friendly models, despite the fact that it is the world’s sixth largest oil exporter!

Norway’s Finance Minster, Kristin Halvorsen has proposed the move which if implemented, will see a ban on all petrol and diesel car sales in Norway from 2015, allowing only electric, biofuel, hydrogen or hybrid cars to be sold on the forecourts. Speaking about the proposal, Mrs. Halvorsen said “This is much more realistic than people think when they first hear about (it). The financial crisis means a lot of those car producers that now have big problems know they have to develop their technology because we also have to solve the climate crisis when this financial crisis is over. That is why we would like a ban from 2015. A lot of people thought this proposal would go after the cars we already have. That is not the case, it’s the new cars bought after 2015.”

It’s unlikely that the ban will be implemented however as many members of the Norwegian Government are opposed to the idea, including Norway’s prime minster Jens Stoltenberg. Stay tuned for updates on the proposal…
