The all-new Civic CR-V is a lot more modern and aggressive than the old model but we don’t care for the coupe-like rear window line - it’s totally out of synch with the CR-V’s chunky looks. Large 17” wheels are fitted to all models, improving its stance and making it a decent looker overall.

Two engines are offered in the all-new CR-V, a 140bhp 2.0 derived from the 1.8-litre in the Civic we have yet to try and Honda’s outstanding 140bhp 2.2 diesel, which we love.

No CR-V could be classed as ‘fast’ but with a 0-100km/h time of just over ten seconds (petrol or diesel) and a top speed around 190km/h, they’re not exactly slow either. The 2.2 diesel cruises, tows and lugs loads better than the petrol, though, and is quieter and has a better range, too.

We haven’t tested the 2007 CR-V yet but we expect it to be competent and safe, rather than enthralling.

Interior & Ergonomics

We haven’t tested the 2007 CR-V yet bu early impressions indicate it should be well made, nicely laid out and a lot more upmarket than the model it replaces. The dash-mounted gearlever and repositioned handbrake are especially welcome but we’ll have our first proper Irish test in February.

Space & Practicality

Score:
7/10

The CR-V might be bigger and more imposing, but it’s no more practical that the model it replaces. The Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Santa Fe offer occasional 7-seat accomodation making them considerably more useful, but as a practical 5-seater the CR-V can’t be faulted.

Safety

All have ESP with trailer assist; front, side & curtain airbags; anti-whiplash front seats, ISOFIX child seat mounts, headrests & seatbelts on all seats & a pedestrian-friendly bonnet, making it a very safety-conscious machine. Adaptive cruise and crash mitigation system are also available.

Value & Running Costs
|
Score:
8/10

|
The CR-V isn’t cheap but for what you get, it’s not that expensive either. Safety and equipment specifications are high and residuals should be rock-solid, especially on diesel EX models with Sat Nav. Running costs will be fair, but large tyres and high tax on 2.2 diesel will cost over time.

Quality & Refinement

Score:

We haven’t tested the 2007 CR-V yet so it’s too early to say, but going on past experience we expect the CR-V to be robust and solid, with an upmarket air missing from the previous CR-V.

The CR-V is loaded with equipment, but then Honda is charging enough for it. The ES has dual-zone climate control, cruise control, ESP, parking sensors & a leather multi-functions steering wheel. The EX is fitted with heated leather seats with memory, bluetooth, Xenon lights, sunroof & sat nav.
